Drug patents have remained a major hurdle in the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal, with the data monopoly period for biological medicines remaining an issue. According to Japan’s Economic and Fiscal Policy Minister Akira Amari, there remains a “huge gap” over setting up a uniform period for patenting medicines. The US is fighting for longer patent protections, while emerging markets want patent protections to be less stringent.
