FDA Set To Issue Further Guidance On 3D Printing


Manufacturers are increasingly using 3D printing in order to create devices with complex internal structures that are matched to a patient’s anatomy. The FDA has been working alongside researchers, manufacturers, and universities in order to better understand how 3D printing is used. The FDA posted a video on the role of 3D printing this month, where Lt. James Coburn, senior FDA research engineer, said: “We’re a long way off from having a 3D printed kidney or heart” but the agency is working to better understand the technology to protect the safety of patients and will issue future guidance on the topic.”
